Argumentative essay-exercices

1. Write essays based on the plans below. Do not write more than 500 words. Construiţi eseuri pe baza planurilor de mai jos. Nu scrieţi mai mult de 500 cuvinte:
a.
Title: “No matter how good a film is, it can never equal a really fine theatre play”. Argue for or against this view.
Attitude: disagree with this idea
Brainstorming:
-          the two of them have different aims
-          can cinema replace theatre?
-          actors and audience
-          feelings rendered by the two
-          the main thing in theatre is acting
-          films have more special effects
-          immitation in theatre
-          presentation
-          special dress when going to the theatre
Introduction:
-          attitudes: a general comparison between films and theatre
Body:
-          presentation of the cinema: how it came to be, how were the films and the conditions to see them; evolution of the cinemas in time; variety of people who go to the cinema
-          presentation of the theatre: it appeared before the cinemas; conditions offered to spectators; variety of people who go to the theatre; evolution of the theatre in time
-          aims of the two; acting is all that it matters in theatre. It is more limited than a film, but it renders emotions live – true human feelings
-          cinemas use a wide variety of special effects: lights, colours, spectacular events, sound, computer work etc.
-          modernity is embodied in film-making
Conclusion:
-          relationship between actors audience
-          a poor film is far better than a bad play
-          more emotions are rendered by films

b.
Title: “We should give up trying to reach other planets and improve the living conditions on earth”. Discuss the view.
Attitude: attack the idea
Brainstorming:
-          Man has always wished to know other planets, too
-          Numerous flights in the outer space
-          E.g. - Apollo expeditions
-          Prestige values
-          Successful results in exploring the Moon and other planets
-          We are entitled to knowlegde
-          This is a must for our progress
Introduction:
-          if we give up trying to know other planets we are totally wrong because we impose limits to ourselves
-          this opposes scientific and technological research
Body:
-          main reasons for opposition: immense sums of money spent on space research. The results obtained have a prestige value only.
-          critics of space research affirm that money should be employed elsewhere – maybe in raising living standards in underdeveloped countries to elliminate poverty, or providing social service
-          these are true convincing arguments, but they are unimaginative arguments. The thrill of recent advances (the moon, Venus, various satellites, the Apollo expeditions, astronauts in orbit etc.).
-          despite good intentions, arguments against space research are mistaken; at any period in the past it would have been possible for people to argue that money spent on research, of any kind, could have been used elsewhere. If this had happened, we wouldn’t have been here today, we wouldn’t have known any progress.
-          it is possible that space research will have practical results. Maybe in the future, we will all find a better planet to live.
Conclusion:
-          space research is right and natural; it has grown out of all the scientific research of the past.
-          there can be no restrictions in Man’s desire to know; science is not “useless”
