Modal Verbs


Verbele modale (Modal Verbs)-numite şi verbe auxiliare modale, se folosesc înaintea unui infinitiv, sau alt verb pentru a arăta atitudinea vorbitorului faţă de cele spuse. Sunt mai speciale, deoarece au aceeaşi formă pentru toate persoanele şi nu au forme de viitor sau trecut (cu unele excepţii, ca de ex. can/could, may/might)
VERBE CARE ARATĂ:
POSIBILITATEA (POSSIBILITY): can/could/may/might(well)
Could şi might pot fi interpretate ca formele de trecut ale lui can şi may, ca formule mai politicoase de adresare, sau pot creşte gradul de incertitudine :
Ex. Don’t go there; it could be a setup.(Nu te duce acolo; s-ar putea să fie o cursă.)
His route from the station might be the same as yours.(Drumul său de la gară ar putea fi la fel cu al tău.)
She may be at home now. (Se poate ca ea să fie acasă acum.)
You might well do as I asked. (Ai putea foarte bine să faci ce-ţi cer.)
I think this may well have been her intention (Se prea poate ca asta să-i fi fost intenţia.)
Negarea posibilitaţii: cannot (can’t)/could not (couldn’t)/may not/might not
Ex. She can’t have said such a thing (Nu se poate ca ea să fi spus aşa ceva/Nu pot crede că….)
He might not be in England at all. (S-ar putea ca el să nici nu fie în Anglia.)
This thing may not sound well (Se poate ca acest lucru să nu sune bine/Este posibil…).
Posibilitatea în viitor: can/could/might/may
Ex. You can change the train in Glasgow, if you wish.(Poţi schimba trenul în Glasgow dacă vrei/Vei putea schimba…)
This plant may produce red flowers.(Această plantă poate avea flori roşii—vom vedea când va înflori, nu se ştie sigur.)
The river could easily overflow (Râul se poate revărsa uşor—acest lucru ar putea fi posibil.)
She might remember what he said (Ea şi-ar putea aminti ce a spus el.)
Posibilitatea în trecut: could/would/might+ have+V(ed—vb. regulate/forma a III—vb. neregulate)
Ex. It could have been a nice trip (Ar fi putut fi o excursie frumoasă, dar n-a fost aşa.)
Denial would have been useless (Negarea ar fi fost inutilă—nu era cazul, adevărul era evident.)
You might have cleaned your room (Ai fi putut să-ţi faci ordine în cameră, dar n-ai făcut acest lucru.)
PROBABILITATEA (PROBABILITY):will/shall/ must/could/might/may
Ex. I shall/will be leaving as soon as I am ready.(Voi pleca de îndată ce mă voi simţi pregătit/Este posibil să plec atunci când mă voi simţi pregătit.)
You must be Victor’s son; I have heard so much about you!(Tu trebuie să fii fiul lui Victor. Am auzit atăt de multe lucruri despre tine!)
Probabilitatea în trecut: could/might/may+ have+vb.(participiu)
Ex. They may have secretly married (Se poate ca ei să se fi căsătorit în secret.)
She could not have sensed  the danger (Se poate ca ea să nu fi perceput pericolul).
IMPOSIBILITATEA(IMPOSSIBILITY): could not/cannot;  can/could+have+ vb.(participiu)
Ex. There’s someone at the door, and it couldn’t be mum; she’s in Italy (E cineva la uşă, şi nu poate fi mama; E în Italia.)
You can’t talk to the dead (Nu poţi vorbi cu morţii/E imposibil…)
She couldn’t have been wrong; she’s always right (Nu se poate ca ea să fi greşit; are întotdeauna dreptate/Nu cred ca ea să fi greşit…)
They can’t have missed the road (Nu se poate să se fi rătăcit.)
DORINŢA (WISH): would rather(persoana care face enunţul diferă de persoana care face acţiunea)/would sooner/wish
Ex. She’d rather be left alone. (Ea ar prefera să fie lăsată singură.)
I wish you wouldn’t tell me what to do (Mi-aş dori să nu-mi mai spui tu ce să fac.)
I would sooner refuse his offer (Mai degrabă i-aş refuza oferta.)
PROMISIUNEA, SFATUL, AMENINŢAREA ŞI REFUZUL (PROMISSE, ADVICE, THREAT AND REFUSAL): will/would/shall/should/ought to; would/should/+have+ vb.(participiu)
Ex. I will prove you that you are wrong (Îţi voi dovedi că te înşeli.)
Your mother shall hear about this! (Te spun mamei tale.)
She would tell everything to the police unless you leave her alone. (Va spune totul la poliţie dacă nu o laşi în pace.)
Unless they cooperate they should be punished. (Dacă nu cooperează, vor fi pedepsiţi.)
You should/ought to ask your mother’s help. (Ar trebui să-i ceri ajutorul mamei tale.)
She shoudn’t have said such a thing about them.(N-ar fi trebuit să spună aşa ceva despre ei.)
We wouldn’t have been here unless they had come to let us know about the incident.(N-am fi fost acum aici dacă ei n-ar fi venit să ne anunţe incidentul.)
HOTĂRÂREA(DETERMINATION): will/would/shall/should
Ex. I will/would do as I please. (Voi face aşa cum doresc—aşa vreau să procedez.)
This baby shall/should be well looked after (Acest copil va fi bine îngrijit.)
I’ll write to him and tell him about their engagement.(Îi voi scrie şi îi voi spune despre logodna lor.)
I’ll have a glass of wine, thank you.(Voi servi un pahar de vin, mulţumesc.)
CAPACITATEA FIZICĂ ŞI INTELECTUALĂ(CAPABILITY): can/could
Ex. It can be very unpleasant (Poate fi foarte neplăcut.)
She could amaze us with her knowledge (Ea ar putea să ne impresioneze cu cunoştinţele ei.)
Mary can play the piano (Mary poate să cânte la pian—ştie.)
Years ago, I could play the piano, too. (Acum câţiva ani, şi eu puteam să cânt la pian—ştiam.)
After the accident they could barely walk (După accident, abia puteau merge.)
 --echivalentul său în trecut sau viitor este be able to:
I was able to help (Am putut ajuta/Am fost în stare să…...)
They will be able to cover all the costs of the trip. (Ei vor fi capabili—vor putea—să acopere toate cheltuielile excursiei.)
COMANDA (ORDER): shall/will/must
Ex. Students shall hand the papers in two weeks’ time (Studenţii vor preda lucrările în două săptămâni—trebuie să predea lucrarea la termen, altfel nu vor mai fi primite.)
Will you shut up at once! (Taci odată!)
Will you come here now!(Vino odată aici!)
Children must obey their parents (Copiii trebuie să-şi asculte părinţii—este datoria lor să…)
INTERDICŢIA (INTERDICTION): mustn’t
Ex. You mustn’t say a word about this (Nu trebuie să sufli o vorbă despre asta—n-ai voie să spui nimic…).
CEREREA (REQUEST): can/could/may/might/will
Ex. Will you help me, please? (Mă ajuţi, te rog?)
Will you pass me the salt? (Îmi dai sarea, te rog?)
Can/could I borrow your car? (Pot să-ţi împrumut maşina?/Îmi dai voie….).
May/might I ask what is your intention? (Pot să te întreb care e intenţia ta?)
PERMISIUNEA (PERMISSION): can/may
Ex. You can/may  borrow my car if you want to. (Poţi să împrumuţi maşina mea dacă vrei.)
Now, that she has finished her homework, she may go outside (Acum, că şi-a terminat temele, poate –are voie—să meargă afară.)
OBLIGAŢIA ŞI NECESITATEA (OBLIGATION AND NECESSITY):  must/have toshoul/ought to
Ex. I must go now (Acum trebuie să plec).
Soldiers must obey orders without questioning. (Soldaţii trebuie să îndeplinească ordinele fără să le comenteze.)
You should/ought to be ashamed (Ar trebui să-ţi fie ruşine.)
--echivalentul pentru trecut şi viitor este have to: We had to do what we were told (A trebuit să facem ceea ce ni s-a spus.)
We’ll have to sell the house (Va trebui să vindem casa.)
LIPSA OBLIGAŢIEI ŞI A NECESITĂŢII (LACK OF OBLIGATION AND NECESSITY): needn’t/not to have to
Ex. You needn’t have bought bread. I did (Nu trebuia să mai iei pâine. Am luat eu.)
I don’t have to listen to this (Nu trebuie să ascult toate astea.)
She won’t have to be present if she doesn’t want to. (Nu va trebui să fie prezentă dacă nu vrea.)
